The Sci-fi Room
Sci- fi merchandise in this country has always been around but the time of true mass merchandising came in the Early 60s when TV brought children shows that sparked their imagination and their desire the emulate their hero’s.
Well
that’s the fancy theory, most kids just wanted a space gun that they could
zap their little sister or have a space ship to take their imagination to the
far reaches of their galaxy (provided that they were back in time for bed!!).
It is to these children (no matter their age) that the Sci-fi room is there
for.
The room contains a lovely collection of some of the biggest TV Sci-fi on the last 40 years
There
are delights of all the Gerry Anderson shows of the 60s & 70s from Supercar
all the way up to Terrahawks including Fireball XL5,Stingray and the one and
only Thunderbirds ….I always have to add the words “ARE GO!!
The
Caped Crusader has always been a great favourite with British children, and
I remember long before Michael Keaton gave the immortal line “I’m
Batman!” a young man called Adam West enthralled a world with such phrases”
as “Atomic batteries to power!” and “To the Batcave Robin!”
The collection covers him from the 60s to the 90s.
Included in this nostalgia is hero who saved the world many times with a sonic
screwdriver and a bag of jelly babies and a battered old Police Box that travelled
through time and space.

Also on view is a small mixture of toys from the most tear jerking Sci-fi film of all time and you don’t have to phone home for the answer, it is of course E.T.
No collection of sci-fi would be complete without the two stars of the 60s and 70s and that is Star Trek boldly going where no one went before in the USS Enterprise and each week we would wait to see Captain Kirk and Mr Spock save the day and every child wanted a “Phaser” and a "communicator", it really is Sci-fi…. I mean who ever heard of a communication device being that small?
Last but not least within the collection there is a small sample of the biggest merchandised film of its time Star Wars with al the figures, ships, weapons, soap, napkins etc.etc. The selection on show holds a display containing nearly all the figures and few choice items of the day.

There are touches of many other movies and TV shows as well as a small celebration of robots, old space toys, figures and odd bits that are there just for fun, because after all that what the collection is really all about.
