The Bottom Corridor
.
Stepping
into the Museum by the “Old Toy Shop Window” is like stepping back
in time.
Here you will find lots of things to evoke your childhood memories, whatever
your age.
The “Toy Shop Window,” with its impressive surround of reproduction
metal advertising signs, is a display showing some of the toys you could have
bought from your local shop in times gone past.
Moving along the bottom corridor, you will find either side is packed with displays.
Here you can see Sindy, Pippa and Tressy dolls from the 1960s onwards, wearing
their original outfits. There is also a collection of the “much loved
Gollies” in various sizes and makes. The T.V related case boasts famous
character toys from Muffin the Mule, Basil Brush, The Herbs and The Wombles,
to lesser-known character toys such as Mr Turnip and Hank from Whirligig and
Four Feather Falls.
A further T.V case includes an interesting selection of toys from Camberwick
Green, Trumpton and Paddington. Alongside this is a case of Pelham puppets,
many still in their original boxes. Opposite these cases there is a display
of the Lone star locos and accessories from the 1970s, in a case with a selection
of most unusual tin plate signs given away with the Adventure comic in the 1920s
depicting trains, ships and sea-planes. Below is a complete selection of the
Airfix 00 scale plastic vehicles and Lead soldiers, with their boxes from the
‘20s to the early 40s made by Britains a
nd
the extremely rare Courtney Doran.
Sooty is also well represented on mugs, puzzles and xylophones on display as
well as Peggy Nesbitt dolls and Mr Men items for our younger visitors.
Housed
in the stairwell next to the soldier room entrance, you can see various makes
of prams along with more gollies, soft animals and dolls residing in them. Above
these and a couple of Dolls houses you can view Patsy’s display of nearly
100 original vintage Action Men with their original outfits and equipment.
Mounting the steps to the Soldier Room you realise that you are in military
territory by the mass of 1960s plastic soldiers, knights, cowboys and Indians,
along with their vehicles and equipment. But there is still space for the first
Scalextric motor racing and Dublo, Trix Twin and Triang train sets.
Continuing up the staircase to the upper landing you will pass more display
cases this time featuring classic children’s books with characters from
their pages and costume dolls.
